Sport Complexes : Sport and Cultural National Center, Kirchberg (Luxemburg) - 1984Website : http://www.hochtief.lu/en/cnsc.php
This vast sport and cultural complex was built on the Kirchberg plateau over a building site spreading over 13 hectares and situated closed to the European Institutions offices.
From a general conception, which dates back from the origin of the project, the project was achieved according to 2 phases :
- The Olympic swimming-pool in 1984.
- The multipurpose Complex in 2002.
All these elements are constituting a very exhaustive program sheltered under a set of triangular shells having great spans, covered with copper, made of prestressed concrete for the swimming-pool, and in glue-laminated wood framework for the Multipurpose Sport Complex.
The Olympic swimming-pool is composed of 4 shells made of thin prestressed shells having a 110 m span and a 30° opening, which are radiating from a common supporting abutment. On the opposite side, each of them resting over 2 reinforced concrete abutments. The totality of the Olympic swimming-pool covers a free area of 10,000 m².
Between each shell, a translucent bent cone made of methacrylate induces an important natural lighting.
The frontwalls constituted of curtain glass-walls on a steel frame are hung to the inner side of the shells, what ensures a transparency between the inner volume and the open spaces.
The swimming-pool includes :
- 1 olympic swimming-pool : 50 x 25m – 8 lanes.
- 1 diving pool – springboards 1-2-5-7,5-10 meters.
- 1 children pool.
- 1 large solarium.
- A tiers stand for about 800 spectators.
------------------------------------------------------
The multipurpose second stage includes a large hall which can be adjusted according to the the sport competitions and the cultural events and which can welcome about 8,000 spectators on mobile or fixed tiers.
This multipurpose hall includes an athletics track 400 m long, removable, having technical, electrical and adaptable sound equipments, as well as press rooms, a referee area, a police station, changing-rooms and an emergency room if necessary.
- A gymnasium 44 x 24m with tiers for 1,000 spectators.
- An auditorium for 180 persons.
- Rooms for 72 athletes.
- A large entrance hall for temporary exhibitions.
- Numerous sport rooms for : judo, boxing, weight lifting, muscle-development exercises, table tennis, etc…
- A warming pool 50 x 12m, connected with the olympic swimmimng-pool.
This program is sheltered under 3 triangular and isoceles shells with a 90 m span, the framework of which is made of glue-laminated wood, supporting a roof structure made of wooden triangular elements providing a thermic and acoustical insulation.
These shells are linked by craddle elements with translucent clerestories, each of them resting upon 3 reinforced concrete abutments, collect the rain waters, and make free a covered area spreading over 18,500m².
A common entrance hall connects the two buildings which offer a great unity of aspect and represent for the Luxemburg an important equipment of international level.
