Velodromes : Covered Stadium, Bordeaux (France) - 1987Built in workshop-manufactured, prefabricated glued laminated cameroon wood (Doussié), this covered cycling stadium can accommodate 5 to 8.000 spectators and besides providing a cycling track in accordance with international standards (250 m circumference, 7 meters wide, and oval shape), it has an athletics track - 60 m - and offers various possibilities for other sport facilities. The whole complex, situated on a 75 m side square plan, is covered with lacquered steel pans with insulation and colour treatment fitting the environment.
The marshy soil required 20 m deep piles foundalions, and a light wood roof that the architect willingly designed to be visible.
This cycling track is worldwide known of the cycling champions for the world records got on this sophisticated and computerized track. It demonstrated throughout the world that the City of Bordeaux is able to promote the sport, the city itself, and the sport architecture on an international level.
